ASME A17.1-2007 / CSA B44-2007 Handbook Handbook on Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators

Handbook / Manual / Guide by ASME International, 01/01/2007

Edward A. Donoghue, CPCA

Full Description

The ASME A17.1, Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, and CSA B44, Safety Code for Elevators, are the accepted guide for the design, construction, installation, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, alteration, and repair of elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, moving walks, material lifts, and dumbwaiters with automatic transfer devices. It is the basis in total or in part for the elevator codes used throughout the United States and Canada. The ASME A17.1/CSA B44 Code is only a guide unless adopted as law or regulation by the authority having jurisdiction. Local jurisdictions may, in their adopting legislation, occasionally revise and/or include requirements in addition to those found in the ASME A17.1/CSA B44 Code. It is therefore advisable to check with the local jurisdiction before applying code requirements in any area. Requirement 1.1.2 outlines examples of equipment not covered by the ASME A17.1/CSA B44 Code. Requirement 1.1.3 specifies those Parts and requirements of the Code, which apply only to new installations, as well as those which apply to both new and existing installations. c1.1.2(d) Equipment Not Covered by This Code: This deviation excludes Special Purpose Personnel Elevators addressed in Section 5.7, because CSA B311 addresses this equipment. c1.1.2(x) Equipment Not Covered by This Code: This deviation excludes mine elevators within the scope of Section 5.9.
