The Silver Britannia
The first Silver Britannia bullion coin was minted in 1997, this coin was minted by the British Royal Mint for the tenth anniversary of its gold Britannia coin.
Silver Britannia’s are struck in Britannia
silver .958 instead of the usual Sterling silver .925 or the more common .999 as most Silver Bullion is struck in. Nearly 1,500 years had passed since the figure of Britannia had graced the coins of the Roman Emperors and in the seventeen century, and her revival for Charles II after such a long absence, Britannia should then make her appearance on the copper coins. Thereafter Britannia was never absent from British coinage,
on the famous cartwheel pennies and two pence’s of 1797 her
spear has been replaced by a trident and she is shown seated on rocks in the sea, with a ship in the background. Britannia is therefore featured on the first gold Britannia coins in 1987 and, ten years later, on the first silver bullion Britannia coins.
Silver Britannia’s were initially offered as a four
-coin silver proof set in 1997, but in the following years they have been minted in proof and bullion finishes. The 1997 & 2013
